Undergoing any surgical procedure can be overwhelming, and the same can be said about hernia surgery. If you have been experiencing abdominal pain accompanied by a bulge or swelling, it could be a case of hernia and you should contact one of our experienced hernia surgeons at the DFW Bariatrics and General Surgery of Dallas. While a hernia surgery is the primary part of the treatment, you should also be aware of post-op care to get the desired result. On that note, we present to you a brief aftercare guide for hernia surgery. Read on.
Religiously Attend Follow-Up Appointments
After you are discharged from the hospital, there will be follow up appointments for about 2-4 weeks after the surgery, which you must not miss at any cost. The follow-ups are aimed at identifying any possible infections or complications by examining bandages or dressings, and to determine whether the recovery is on track.
Follow Pain Management
Pain management is necessary to ensure you do not face discomfort during the recovery. The doctor may prescribe some over-the-counter medication or a combination of OTC and prescription pain-management medicine to ease the pain.
Keep Your Eyes Open for Any Complications
Although a minimally invasive surgical procedure has lesser chances of postoperative complications compared to an open surgery, you should still keep an eye out for possible complications characterized by pain or other changes. If you experience persistent fatigue or fever, consult your doctor immediately. In general, patients should be getting better every day after surgery.
Other Dos and Don’ts
Some of the other precautions after a hernia surgery include maintaining a healthy BMI and avoiding or quitting the use of tobacco. Try maintaining a healthy lifestyle that is free of any substance abuse and food addictions. In addition, the patient must also avoid undertaking physically demanding tasks until they get a nod from their doctor.
